Cardiac Science Sues Zoll, Manufacturer of Automated External Defibrillators, for Patent Infringement

IRVINE, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cardiac Science Inc (Nasdaq: DFIB - news), a leading developer and manufacturer of life-saving, automated public access defibrillators (AEDs), reported today that it has filed a patent infringement action against Zoll Medical Corporation (Nasdaq: ZOLL - news) in the United States Court for the Central District of California.

Cardiac Science's suit alleges that Zoll's new automated external defibrillator sold under the name ``AED Plus,'' infringes Cardiac Science United States Patent numbers 5,579,919 and 6,125,299, entitled ``Medical Electrode Packaging Technology,'' and ``AED With Force Sensor,'' respectively. Cardiac Science is seeking an injunction prohibiting further manufacture, use, sale, or offer for sale of the product and an unspecified amount of damages

The Zoll ``AED Plus'' defibrillator, which was recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for marketing in the United States, is promoted by Zoll as providing feedback to a person performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) about compression and rate of the force being applied as well as having pre-connected disposable defibrillation electrodes, features which the Cardiac Science suit alleges are covered under its patents.

Cardiac Science President and CEO Raymond W. Cohen said, ``The intellectual assets of Cardiac Science are extremely valuable and constitute a cornerstone of our business. As such, we will aggressively defend those properties from infringement by competitors.''
