Science Sues Zoll, Manufacturer of Automated External Defibrillators, for
Patent Infringement
IRVINE, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cardiac
Science Inc (Nasdaq: DFIB - news), a leading developer and manufacturer of
life-saving, automated public access defibrillators (AEDs), reported today that
it has filed a patent infringement action against Zoll Medical Corporation (Nasdaq:
ZOLL - news) in the United States Court for the Central District of California.
Cardiac Science's suit alleges that Zoll's new automated external
defibrillator sold under the name ``AED Plus,'' infringes Cardiac Science
United States Patent numbers 5,579,919 and 6,125,299, entitled ``Medical
Electrode Packaging Technology,'' and ``AED With Force Sensor,'' respectively.
Cardiac Science is seeking an injunction prohibiting further manufacture, use,
sale, or offer for sale of the product and an unspecified amount of damages
The Zoll ``AED Plus'' defibrillator, which was recently cleared by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for marketing in the United States, is promoted by
Zoll as providing feedback to a person performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR) about compression and rate of the force being applied as well as having
pre-connected disposable defibrillation electrodes, features which the Cardiac
Science suit alleges are covered under its patents.
