AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It’s a very simple to use device (about the size of a laptop) that is used to shock the heart of a person suffering from sudden cardiac arrest to return the heart to a normal rhythm.
Sudden cardiac arrest usually occurs in adults and is a leading cause of cardiac related death. This is not to say that children are without risk.
Student athletes who suffer from SCA often have an underlying heart rhythm disturbance that is undiagnosed.
SCA is caused by an electrical malfunction of the heart’s circuitry which could lead to sudden death if not treated immediately with the use of an AED. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is often confused with a heart attack ,which typically happens when blocked coronary arteries prevent blood from reaching the heart’s muscles.
